(YOUR) WORKERS IN AMERICA (YOUR COMPANY)

(YOUR) WORKERS IN AMERICA (YOUR COMPANY)

Sing a little bit of these work’en man blues

Cry a little bit of these work’en man blues

                                                                                     Merle Haggard

In doing research for the last book and most recent articles that I've published, I've come across some very interesting facts that you might want to think about, as you manage your department or business.  Think about the employees you are responsible for, as well as, those you might be looking to fire and hire.  Keep in mind that I am just the messenger.

·                    According to the Department of Labor, 80% of the companies in the United States employed less than a hundred people and those firms account for 75% of the new hiring in America .

·                    There are four generations of employees in the work place, the traditionalist, the boomer, the GenXer, and the millennial.  They see "work" differently.

·                    20 years ago, there was a deeper connection between companies and their workers.  Job dissatisfaction, distress and disengagement on the part of the employees are greater than they have ever been.

·                    The research firm, The Discovery Group reported that 52% of employees do not believe the information they received from senior management.

·                    A similar survey found that one in six workers in the U.S. say they have withheld a suggestion for improving worker efficiency and fewer than 40% of them trust the company to keep its promises.  ( Princeton Survey Research Associates)

·                    A Korn Ferry survey found that 62 percent of global executives are unhappy with their current position of employment.

·                    A Conference Board survey of 5,000 U.S. households found that 67% of workers did not identify with or feel motivated to drive their employer's business goals and 25% were simply showing up to collect a paycheck.

·                    The average 40 year old in the U.S. has changed jobs 10 times (DOL).

·                    By 2010 the number of workers between 25 and 54 years of age will increase by % and workers over 55 years of age will increase 46.6%.

·                    59% of the workers in the U.S. are fearful of losing their job.

·           It isn't any easier for CEOs. According to the Fordyce Letter, in 2006, a CEO in the U.S. left their job either voluntarily or involuntarily every six hours.

·                    400,000 people lose their jobs every week in the U.S. and 600,000 people change jobs every week.  A Blessing White study found that, in 2007, 58% of workers in the large study said they will stay in their present job compared to 65% the year before.

 ·                    75% of Americans are dissatisfied with the U.S. economy and worry about their financial goals.

·                    In the first six months of 2008, America experienced its biggest job loss in five years, with the unemployment rate jumping to 5.5%.

 ·                    Only 14% of American workers say they're satisfied with their jobs.

·                    In 2007, the average job tenure of U.S. workers was four years. (Economist.com, June 28th, 2008.) It will likely drop to between two and a half  and three years over the next five years.

Volumes have been written as to the reasons for all of these facts. The reasons don’t matter as much as your ability to personally deal with them. How can you make a difference in your company? How can you promote loyalty, security and job satisfaction?
